1972 Mary Shields founded the Madalawn Nursing Home in Brockton Massachusetts. 1982 Built the largest regional dialysis provider, localizing a better care model. 1986 Established the first free-standing MRI Center in New England, currently includes 35 imaging centers within two hours of Boston. 1991 Opened first of 4 free-standing outpatient radiation oncology centers. 2012 Founded Shields Health Solutions, the nation’s largest network of health system-owned specialty pharmacy programs supporting over 120,000 patients/monthly across 45 states. Shields Health Solutions was acquired by Walgreens Boots Alliance for $1.4B in 2022. 1998 Launched a mobile PET/CT unit that now serves 16 locations across New England. 2010 Built the first of four Ambulatory Surgical Centers in Massachusetts (ASC). 2022 Created Shields At Home, an innovative solution to augment the hospital’s increasing on-site inpatient capacity by providing high-quality, hospital-level care to patients in the comfort of their own home.

Since the 1972 launch of the Madalawn Nursing Home in Brockton, Massachusetts, the Shields family has been committed to innovative care for more than 50 years. In addition to working with over 1,000 healthcare organizations across 45 states, the Shields family operates 40 outpatient facilities across New England and established the largest regional dialysis provider.
